Day of the Dead Experience Mexico City: Ancestors, Altars & Cacao in CDMX

Sin anunciar en Ciudad de México

This experience offers guests a magical and heart-opening way to experience Día de Muertos(Day of the Dead) in CDMX. You’ll have the chance to connect with the beauty of the ofrendas(altars) and reflect on your own ancestors in a meaningful way. Along the way, you’ll learn stories and traditions about the holiday that most visitors never hear…discovering a more authentic, less touristy side of Mexico City’s celebrations. We’ll begin with a traditional tasting of Mexican cacao and pan de muerto as a delicious opportunity to slow down, savor and experience the foods of the season with a new sense of appreciation and connection.

From there, we step into the streets of the ornate building of the Centro Histórico where mega ofrendas, floral displays, incense and candles light up every corner of downtown for Día de Muertos. Along the way you’ll hear spooky myths and legends about the ancient and colonial periods of the city related to Día de Muertos, such as La Llorona and the ghosts of the Aztecs after the fall of the capital Tenochtitlan, pre-colonial Mexico City.

As we walk, you’ll:

🕯️Visit the Zócalo’s monumental Mega Ofrenda and hidden community altars along the Centro Histórico ofrenda route.

💀Learn the history of ancient Mexico City (Tenochtitlán), colonial churches, and historic buildings that line our path.

🍫 Discover the sacred role of cacao in Mexica(Aztec) and Día de Muertos traditions, including offerings for the dead to its ritual significance.

✨ Discover how the ofrendas and customs bridge pre-Hispanic beliefs, Spanish influence, and modern celebrations.

📸 Capture the altars at golden hour as day turns into night, when candles and cempasúchil flowers glow in the heart of the city.

✨ What Makes 2025 Extra Special

This year’s Día de Muertos festivities in Mexico City carries even deeper meaning. 2025 marks the 700-year anniversary of the founding of Tenochtitlán, the Mexica capital that once stood where the Zócalo is today.
